    Sharon,

The built in SEO uses the page’s title as well as the excerpt function to generate the title and description tags used by Google and other search engines. It also creates the tags used by Facebook to help it with descriptions and images.

If you’d like finer control over the titles and descriptions, then I’d suggest using the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin. It does a very good job of giving you control over titles and descriptions and other useful items such as XML sitemaps. I use it on my own sites as well.

Let me know if you have any questions,
    Bill
