I was hoping to place the rel=author code into the footer section of the theme settings. Unfortunately the field does not accept HTML.

I was also not able to insert the code into the footer.php file.

Any advice on how to verify authorship?

    Erik,

Great question. The Options Framework that we use in our themes does filter out HTML as part of it’s data sanitization routine. It’s possible to filter it though so you can allow more tags through.

I’ve written a quick plugin that you can download and install that will filter the text input and allow you to add in a link with rel, target, href, and title attributes too. After you activate the plugin, it should allow you to save a link in your footer.

If you have any questions or trouble, let me know.

    Thanks,
    Bill
