This seems to be related to the Google Chrome font bug — it ONLY seems to happen in Google Chrome for windows. I tried installing the font bug plugin that you have, but it hasn’t solved the problem. Most of the time, on initial load of the page, most of the text (if not all of the text) in the widgets on the front page loads as “clear.” The text is there, but invisible — you can still hover over links and select the text, though even selecting it doesn’t make it show up.

I can’t replicate the problem in any other browser or mobile device. And it loads fine on Chrome for my Mac. It does seem to be consistent for anyone using Chrome on Windows, though.

Now, I’ll admit that I was poking around in the css a few days ago, looking for a way to change the background color of the widgets. ALL I changed, as a test, was the color of the widget backgrounds, and then reset it to the original.

When the bug showed up, I put back the initial CSS file, but it’s still not working. I’d like to avoid having to do a complete theme reset.

So … What did I break? And how do I fix it?

    Thanks for your time.

    Melissa,

Sorry for the trouble. This unfortunately this is a bug that’s in the Chrome browser itself. Google knew there was an issue with web fonts not always rendering, but they shipped it anyway.

The fix plugin works for many sites, but not all.
The only certain way around the trouble is to disable Google fonts. There’s an option to do that at the bottom of the styling tab in the theme options.

If I can help, let me know.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Thank you. Disabled web fonts and the problem vanished. You’d think google would make sure that their browser worked with their own web fonts! I did some research and from what I can tell this problem goes back more than a year, too. Ridiculous and frustrating.

Thanks for your help, and I’m glad to know I wasn’t the one that broke it!

I’m glad that solved it. Hopefully they’ll fix this thing soon. I know the businesses that are built on web fonts like Typekit and Font Deck have to be really unhappy over this since there’s little they can do to help their customers.

    Take care,
    Bill
