Where are these Subscribers coming from?

I have started getting emails saying I have a new user registration on my site, it gives a username and an email address. I don’t know if these are spam attempts or if there is something on my site where they are registering.
Any information you could give me as to what is happening would be appreciated.

Hi Fred,
If you’re not encouraging people to register, most likely they are spam registrations from bots. You can delete the users by going to users in your WordPress dashboard. Can check the box by their names and then use the bulk actions drop down at the top of the list to delete them.
You can turn off open registration as well. Go to Settings in your dashboard and click on General. In the middle of that screen you’ll find a checkbox for membership. Make sure that allowing anyone to register isn’t enabled.
