Remove category photo and text

Bill,

Is it possible to remove the category header picture and text completely and just go back to the old format? I know that I could just remove the thumbnail but that ends up leaving a grey space on the top of the page with just the writing in white. Can I completely remove this section so just the products show up like it used to look?

If it isn’t possible to remove this area completely, do you have a suggestion on how to make the thumbnail appear more quickly? Otherwise the site just sits grey for a while as it’s loading.

Some of the images that are used in the site are really really big. Some were larger than 5mb which will take a long time to download. Some of the others are around 450kb which is reasonable and will load quickly. I would replace the ones with the largest file sizes with ones that have been optimized. That’s how to make the biggest difference.

If you’d like to hide the hero section on categories, here’s how:

1. Go to your theme options page and choose the Advanced tab.
2. Scroll down to the Custom CSS box and add this:

   
   .tax-product_cat #hero-section {
   	display: none;
   }
   
   body.image.tax-product_cat .wrap {
   	margin-top: 150px;
   }
   

3. Update your settings.

The reason I added the hero section as an option on product categories is I noticed these were my best performing pages in my own store. Having the hero section cut the bounce rate on this page by 15% bringing it all the way down to only a 3.3% bounce rate. That meant that 96.7% of visitors to these pages stayed on my site. That’s why I added in this feature back in April.
