Hello Bill,
I replaced a theme on this website and if I set the permalinks to default they work but I need the to be post name in order to provide seo to the site. Can you take a look at it, I can send you log in so you can look if you want. It maybe a the old theme or it may be a plugin that is already installed that is causing this problem.

This is one spot where WordPress does not do a good job of giving feedback. In order for the permalinks to work, WordPress adds some code to the .htaccess file on your server. But if it can’t write the necessary information, then permalinks will not function.
Unfortunately, the notification is at the bottom of the screen where you have to scroll down to see it.
If you’ll make your .htaccess file in the root directory of your site writable and update your settings that should do it for you. You can then change the permissions on the file back.
