There is a text widget that allows me to put a block of text on the home page on a white background. The best way to describe what i would like to do is to be able to insert an image as the first ‘widget’. i’ve attached an image i edited for a visual

One way you could do that is with a plugin called BlackStudio TinyMCE. It adds a “Visual Widget” that’s basically the editor from the page/post screen in a widget form. It makes inserting text, links and images pretty simple. You could use it to insert three images into the body of one widget. If they are left aligned and sized to fit, they should line up in three columns like that. You could also use one of the many column shortcode plugins out there to actually create three columns in the widget’s content area and add an image to each one.

Let me know if you have any questions,
    Bill

Yes. Go to plugins in your dashboard and click on Add New. You can search there.
