Hi Bill, I don’t know if this is more of a friendly notification – or something that may yield a fruitful recommendation to my friendly theme-guru – – – but either way, I wanted to share my status with you so (at a minimum) you’d know that this is affecting folks like me out here. Scott

    ACTION NOTES:

Ran update to WordPress 4.4 this AM and subsequently updates required to WooCommerce 2.4.12 and related plugins to newest version – Then, customer called a few minutes later telling me she is getting the following error:

There was a problem connecting to the payment gateway.

I took her info / order by phone and have attempted to enter it through our site for her. I’m getting the same error. What’s up!?

PS – I turned over and reentered all the API’s for Stripe. Same issue persists.

Just received confirmation from Stripe of no errors with my account, API’s, or communication and no systems down.

    Hello Scott,

Thank you for contacting WooCommerce Support! I’m happy to help you with this. We’ve been seeing some errors from users after updating their WordPress version to 4.4. It’s possible that your issue is caused by your server’s SSL/cURL configuration; this is described in more detail here:

    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/34935

I would recommend that your hosting provider update OpenSSL on the server to f+, and let them know that your issue began after updating WordPress to 4.4. Please let us know if it continues after doing so.

Please let me know if you need any further help, and have a great day!

    – – – –

Given this suggestion, I reached out to my host (GoDaddy) and my reply to Thomas from WooCommerce given notes from GoDaddy is below here:

Hello Thomas – and thank you for your help. We are continuing to struggle – and the two (kind) customers who called today to let me know they couldn’t checkout are proof. Wondering how many orders were lost due to frustration without report.

I have contacted my host (GoDaddy) and they conveyed that we are running OpenSSL 1.0.0 on the server I’m on. They can change me over to a wordpress dedicated server that’s running 1.0.1 (with additional downtime, cost, etc.) but it is still earlier version than 1.0.1f. They will not push any update through on any server unless I buy a dedicated server – and we’re not big enough to justify / afford that.

The tech worked with me for almost 2 hours – and essentially what was conveyed to me was that something in the update to WordPress 4.4 or updates to the other plugins installed / updated after the 4.4 rollout caused a conflict with SSL that is forcing a redirect to http throughout – the tech’s notes are below here:

“after disabling the plugins I was able to see that the redirect to http stopped which is telling me that it is more than likely a setting like http redirect in one of the plugins which is interfering with the site.”

NOTE: this did not require disabling our Theme to solve the issue.

He also found an article (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wordpress-https-conflicts-with-woocommerce) that suggested turning off the “Force SSL” checkbox in WooCommerce settings, then manually setting three pages (1. Checkout, 2. Checkout -> Pay, and 3. My Account) as needing SSL. I unclicked the box – but then couldn’t figure out how to manually set SSL on these three… so just turned it back on.

Bottom line – I need to get my system functioning again. NO WORSE TIME FOR A SITE TO BE DOWN THAN DURING THE CHRISTMAS BUYING SEASON FOR A BUSINESS LIKE MINE!!!

I see my options as returning to an earlier version of WordPress / WooCommerce / Stripe Plugin / etc… (thought I have no idea how to do this) or getting guidance on some band-aid I can apply that will let the transactions go through correctly (by eliminating the redirect to http loop).

    Desperately hopeful,

    Scott

So sorry about the trouble there. It’s an awful time of year to have something like this happen. You can roll WordPress and WooCommerce back to the earlier versions if you’d like to. Before doing this, make a backup using a plugin like WordPress backup to Dropbox or something similar just in case.

Go to https://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/ to download the last version of WordPress you were using. Then go to https://wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce/developers/ to get the earlier WooCommerce version.

Next unzip the WordPress zip file and open up that folder. Delete out the wp-content folder you find in there. Next unzip the woocommerce folder and leave it alone.

Now use a FTP program to open up the files on your server. You can get the FTP login details from inside your GoDaddy account. If you don’t have a FTP program you could use a demo of Transmit (Mac) (http://panic.com/transmit/) or Filezilla (https://filezilla-project.org/).

On your server, locate your WordPress installation. Where it is depends a bit on how it was set up. It may be in a folder. What you’ll want to do is upload the files and folders in the WordPress directory you just downloaded to the spot where it’s installed on your server. That will overwrite the files there which is what you want.

Next go to the wp-content/plugins/ folder on your server. Upload the woocommerce folder you just unzipped here to overwrite the current version of WooCommerce.

That should take the versions back a notch. Try logging in and see how it goes.

Thank you so much for giving this guidance for me – – – especially when no-one else cared to. TRULY appreciated… please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s ever a chance for me to tender a friendly testimony for you or your work.

    – – –

I’ve rolled back WordPress to 4.3.1 … didn’t take the first time – so had to try a second time to get it to work. Site is back online – but the Homepage slider isn’t appearing – – – just blank white space.

Waiting to hear from WooCommerce which version I need to install (don’t have record of which WAS installed) prior to the update. Will roll that in this evening and test again.

    Hey Scott,

I’m glad you’re getting closer there. It looks like the jQuery javascript library is turning up a not found error. It runs most interactive elements on WordPress sites like the slider and similar things.

Try uploading via FTP the wp-includes folder to your server again. That library lives there and hopefully adding it again will let it be found.

I may just take you up on the testimony in the new year 🙂

Let me know what you turn up,
    Bill

Perfecto … I feel like a dunce, but it’s working like a charm – and orders smooth. Apparently the folder got truncated before upload finished. Thanks for your patience – and guidance. Scott

As an aside: if you have others who have this trouble, switching back to earlier version of WordPress all that was required. WooCommerce etc. all AOK latest build with 4.3.1.
