Adding fonts

Are adding fonts to the theme as easy as adding the ttf files to the themes font folder?

Hey James,

Good question. The most simple and legal ways to add fonts to your site are to go with a service. The theme has Google Webfonts built in and there are numerous commercial sources of fonts out there that will let you embed fonts on your site. Many of those have plugins that can facilitate that too.

If you have a font you’d like to use that isn’t available from a service, you first will want to make sure that it can legally be used on the web. Most commercial fonts will only allow web use via a service because those prevent users from downloading the font.

If you font can legally be used on a site and it’s not available from a service, you can still use it. It’ll just take a bit more work.

There is a web font generator at http://www.fontsquirrel.com/tools/webfont-generator that you can use to upload your font. It’ll give you a package to download. You’ll need to then upload that to the theme folder on your server. From there you’ll need to add a bit of CSS to then apply the new fonts to the front end of your site.

At one point a few years ago there were a couple of plugins that would let you upload a font to use this way, but they have all been discontented by their authors.
