    Hi Bill,

Can I add an external link to a feature graphic on a particular page so that when the visitor clicks on the image, it will direct them to the external link? How about take them there in a separate window?

    Thanks

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

Good question. If you’d like to open all external links in a new window, I would go with this plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/open-external-links-in-a-new-window/). It will cause them all to work that way. Just be aware that a fairly high percentage of users strongly dislike when sites open new tabs without them choosing to do that themselves. That’s why you don’t see this practice as often anymore.

    Take care,
    Bill

Thanks for the tip. I’ll rethink my strategy for redirecting visitors.

How about the other issue of being able to click on a feature image of a page and have it link to another page on my site? Right now the feature image when clicked, returns you to the current page. I guess I could embed the image in the text and provide a link, but I was wondering if there was a way to assign a url to the feature image itself.

    Thanks.

    Peter,

Could you point me to a featured image you’re trying to use to direct visitors someplace other than the the page/post the featured image belongs to? That’ll help me out as I help you.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

The page that I’m working with is http://ltlov.org/?page_id=571

I want to link the feature image on that page to http://ltlov.org/?page_id=586
so that when you click the image, it takes you there.

Thanks Pete for sending over the link. Realistically what you’ll need to do is not set that image as the featured image and then just place it at the top of the content on that page. That will move it below the title, but you can set it to link to any URL that way. That’s the best option here.

I thought you were going to say this. It looks like the underlying structure of a feature image doesn’t lend itself well for this.

    I’ll make the changes.

    Sorry about that Pete.
