I’m wondering on how much to optimize my images for them to load right away. No optimizing doesn’t load as fast as I want it to and I don’t want to lose a lot of quality.
Hello Connor,
Great question. I typically size the images to be around 2000 by 1200 pixels dimension wise. That way they’ll be of sufficient size for large and small displays.
As far as the quality of the JPEG’s, I generally set them to around 40. Each image is unique, so some of them need to be as high as 45, while others are good at 35. I rarely go outside that range.
Once the images are made, I often use Yahoo!’s Smush It (https://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/smushit/) to squeeze a few extra kb out of them. There’s even a Smush It plugin that you can install that will apply that service to the files in your media library automatically.
If you need any help, just let me know.
Thanks,
Bill
